Mid-Year Gut Check
No, we’re not writing to remind you that time is fleeting—though it certainly is. Instead, we want to invite you to take stock of where God has met you and your family in these first six months of the Jubilee Year and where he might be calling you to go next. Maybe you can approach it in terms of a few highs and lows. We’ll dive in here:
Highs
Patience: God has been teaching us patience—with Him, with each other, and with ourselves. Reading about Christ’s wounds and His Passion has helped us see that waiting and enduring are forms of participation in His love. We’re indebted to this challenging talk by Bishop Erik Varden, who links patience with the Passion of Christ.
Daily Mass: We’re blessed to have the opportunity to hit pause on our workday for daily Mass, and have started to attend more often. These quiet encounters with our Lord Jesus have anchored our busiest weeks.
Asking for Help: Through our recent capital campaign, we were reminded of this truth: when you invite others to come alongside you in mission, people show up. And what goes for this significant ministry step of course applies to the entire life of discipleship—asking for help and leaning into the communion of saints has been a highlight of 2025 for us.
Lows
Too Little Margin: We’ve “preached” in our Heaven in Your Home Letters about safeguarding the sanctuary of your Trinity House from the voracious “culture of busy,” but nonetheless we still succumb to the temptation to say yes too often. And no surprise here: lots of good things can undermine the best thing, our family’s deepening communion in the Most Holy Trinity. God has been teaching us this lesson for years, and apparently, we’re slow learners.
Too Much Noise: Our attention spans have frayed from too much information and too many platforms. This digital noise reverberates in our interior life, making silence feel foreign and focus elusive. We need to more fully embrace the ancient truth that God desires to encounter us in the silence, away from our noise and projects.
Mid-Year Resolutions?
So what are your highs and lows? What’s going to change as the year rolls on? Alas, there is no “quick fix” to reverse unhealthy patterns that may be pulling our families in the wrong direction. Each of us has to dig deep to discover the particularities of God’s leading at this moment.
But this fact remains the same for each of us: The Lord is inviting us to rediscover Him. To not allow these summer days to slip through our fingers in a kind of haze. To give thanks to Him for the blessings of these first six months, and recommit to finishing the year strong.
For some of us, perhaps that means re-engaging with the heart of the Jubilee of 2025: Pilgrims of Hope (our post for families is here). For others, maybe it means recommitting to the intentions we set out at the beginning of the year. Some may find that the Heaven in Your Home Flowchart points the way to new beginnings.
But let’s all take hold of this truth, this promise: If we ask him to show us the next small step—for ourself, for our marriage, for our family—he is faithful and he will reveal the way forward.
