What Now? Family Life After Trinity Sunday

In the first week of each month, we turn our focus to Faith Life, or Level 1 of your family’s Trinity House. Since this past Sunday’s Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity is so fundamental to Faith Life, we decided to share our Aleteia article with you once more. We hope and pray that it—together with the resources in the Toolkit below—will help you to make new connections in just how your family reflects the Holy Trinity each day!

“Families,” St. John Paul II famously exhorted us, “become what you are!”

As newlyweds 20 years ago, we spent zero time thinking about what the Holy Trinity—whom the Church celebrates on today’s Solemnity—meant for our marriage or dreams of starting a family. Whatever the doctrine of the Trinity had to say about the dynamics of the inner life of God, we left that to the theologians. For us, each day became a blur of diapers, dishes, commutes, and bills.

Five kids later, every aspect of our lives seems shot through—illumined, blessed, ennobled—by the Trinity. As a family, we’ve consecrated ourselves to the Holy Trinity(continue reading at Aleteia.org)

Heaven In Your Home Toolkit

Becoming more conversant and fluent in just how your family reflects the Trinity is not “academic” — it’s deeply practical and important for daily life. To that end, we’re happy to point you to the following resources:

Fr. James Hudgins’ homily “Why the Trinity Matters” (15 mHeavenin) is well worth a listen. He challenges us to connect three aspects of God’s love—that it is “personal, relational, and sacrificial”—with every aspect of our lives.

Greg and Lisa Popcak’s “Here are 4 Ways the Family Can Imitate the Trinity and Reflect God to the World” (OSV News) offers some very helpful insights.

How to Understand the Trinity” is Bishop Barron’s 15-min. homily (over 100K views so far) from this past Sunday. In it, he encourages us to allow the gesture of making the sign of the cross to “awaken” in us “a sense of lover, the beloved, and the shared love.”

Fr. Joe Moschetto in “You Belong to the Trinity” (2Minutes2Virtue video) also suggests that making the sign of the cross can be our bridge to deeper daily reflection on the mystery of the Trinity.

It’s time to avail ourselves and our families of resources like this OSV News “Summer Reading List for Kids of All Ages“.

Speaking of summer reading, political philosopher Matt Feeney’s Little Platoons: A Defense of Family in a Competitive Age states that the family is an “irreplaceable zone of human connections” that can offer “a living critique” of the world around us. Feeney takes on challenges such as digital media and calls on parents to help their children “develop a robust inner life, a zone of private reflection.” Read more in Kay Hymowitz’s review at the Institute of Family Studies blog.

This coming Sunday is Corpus Christi. Make a plan for your family such as attending a Eucharistic procession. “How to Make the Feast of Corpus Christi Come Alive in Your Family” (Aleteia) offers some other great ideas.

Please Join Us In Prayer

That the reality of the Holy Trinity’s communion of persons might be glimpsed in our families, as we seek to reflect God’s love to one another and to the world around us;

That our families might develop the Fruits of the Spirit, and act with love, kindness, and peace, and work together for the good of all;

That as we prepare to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, our families might treasure and reflect upon our belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist;

For an end to the pandemic; for safety and healing for all those impacted by COVID-19, and for all medical personnel;

For the ministry of Trinity House Community, including the staff of Trinity House Café, and all individuals and families who are seeking to reflect the life of the Trinity in their homes.

In Christ,
